With deep sadness, IAFF Local 452 announces the passing of retired Vancouver Fire Department firefighter Michael “Mike” Gross, who died on June 16, 2026, at the age of 67. His passing has left family, friends, former colleagues, and the firefighting community mourning the loss of a respected brother firefighter whose dedication and service touched many lives.
Mike began his career with the Vancouver Fire Department on April 26, 1982, embarking on a journey of service that would span three decades. Throughout his 30 years serving the citizens of Vancouver and Clark County, he earned the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters through his professionalism, commitment, and unwavering dedication to the job.
Known as an exceptional engineer, Mike was recognized for his skill, experience, and ability to remain dependable in critical moments. His colleagues remember him as someone who could always be counted on when challenges arose. While he carried the strength and determination expected of a firefighter, those who knew him best also saw the kindness and compassion behind his tough exterior.
Throughout his career, Mike made a lasting impression on the people he worked with and the communities he served. His contributions extended beyond the firehouse, as he represented the values of teamwork, courage, and service that define the firefighting profession.
After retiring from the Vancouver Fire Department, Mike embraced a new chapter of life by fulfilling his dream of living in Thailand. There, he enjoyed his time surrounded by friends and family, creating new memories and experiencing a lifestyle he had long hoped to pursue.
In honor of his life and legacy, Mike’s family gathered for a special ceremony in Phuket on July 10, 2026. During the remembrance, his ashes were spread into the ocean by his son, creating a meaningful farewell that celebrated the life of a man who gave so much to others.
Those who knew Mike will remember him not only for his years of service but also for the friendships he built, the lives he influenced, and the example he set for those who followed him. His legacy will continue through the firefighters he mentored, the colleagues who stood beside him, and the family and friends who carry his memory forward.
