With profound sadness, family, friends, colleagues, and members of the global design community are mourning the passing of Dave Dawson, the beloved co-founder and CEO of The Urban Electric Co., who passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 28, 2026. His death marks the loss of an extraordinary entrepreneur, design visionary, and advocate for American craftsmanship whose passion and leadership transformed the luxury lighting industry.

Dave’s passing has left a deep void among those who knew him personally and professionally. While his accomplishments earned international recognition, those closest to him remember him most for his humility, generosity, kindness, and the genuine care he showed to everyone around him. He was a leader who believed that success was not only measured by achievements but by the people inspired and supported along the way.

Dave’s journey with The Urban Electric Co. began in 2002 after he and his wife, Jennifer “Jen” Dawson, relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. While renovating their historic home, the couple struggled to find handcrafted lighting that reflected the quality and character they envisioned. This challenge sparked the creation of a company built on artistry, authenticity, and a dedication to preserving skilled craftsmanship.

After opening a showroom on Upper King Street, Dave partnered with Creative Director Michael Amato in 2003 to help grow a small workshop into a nationally recognized manufacturing company. Through vision, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence, The Urban Electric Co. became a respected name in the design world, producing handcrafted lighting fixtures admired for their beauty, quality, and timeless style.

Under Dave’s leadership, the company’s creations became part of distinguished residential, hospitality, and commercial projects around the world. Its work could be found in prestigious locations, including Augusta National, Soho House, Four Seasons properties, and other celebrated destinations. One of the company’s most notable achievements came in 2009 when it was commissioned to create custom lanterns for the private residence of the White House during the administration of President Barack Obama, further highlighting the company’s reputation for exceptional craftsmanship.

Beyond his success in business, Dave’s greatest impact came through the culture he created. He was deeply committed to valuing employees, supporting artisans, and creating opportunities for future generations of craftspeople. Through programs such as UECO University, he helped preserve traditional manufacturing skills while encouraging young professionals to pursue careers in skilled trades.

Colleagues and friends remember Dave as more than a successful CEO. He was a mentor, a supporter, and a person who made others feel appreciated. His ability to build meaningful relationships and lead with compassion earned him the respect and admiration of employees, industry peers, and the many people whose lives he influenced.

Dave also believed strongly in giving back to the community. Through charitable efforts and community initiatives, he worked to create opportunities and strengthen the places and people around him. His generosity and commitment to service became an essential part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Dave is survived by his wife, Jennifer “Jen” Dawson, and their son, Jack Dawson, along with countless friends, colleagues, employees, and admirers who will continue to honor his memory.

As the design world remembers Dave Dawson, many will celebrate the creativity, passion, and humanity that defined his remarkable life. His work will continue to bring beauty and light into homes and spaces around the world, but his greatest legacy will be found in the people he inspired, the craftsmen he supported, and the culture of excellence and kindness he built.

Heartfelt condolences are extended to the Dawson family, friends, colleagues, and everyone mourning this profound loss. May they find comfort in cherished memories, strength in one another, and peace in knowing that Dave’s vision and influence will continue for generations.

Dave Dawson will be deeply missed, forever respected, and always remembered.
