Dave’s journey with The Urban Electric Co. began in 2002 after he and his wife, Jennifer “Jen” Dawson, relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. While renovating their historic home, the couple struggled to find handcrafted lighting that reflected the quality and character they envisioned. This challenge sparked the creation of a company built on artistry, authenticity, and a dedication to preserving skilled craftsmanship.
After opening a showroom on Upper King Street, Dave partnered with Creative Director Michael Amato in 2003 to help grow a small workshop into a nationally recognized manufacturing company. Through vision, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence, The Urban Electric Co. became a respected name in the design world, producing handcrafted lighting fixtures admired for their beauty, quality, and timeless style.
Under Dave’s leadership, the company’s creations became part of distinguished residential, hospitality, and commercial projects around the world. Its work could be found in prestigious locations, including Augusta National, Soho House, Four Seasons properties, and other celebrated destinations. One of the company’s most notable achievements came in 2009 when it was commissioned to create custom lanterns for the private residence of the White House during the administration of President Barack Obama, further highlighting the company’s reputation for exceptional craftsmanship.
Beyond his success in business, Dave’s greatest impact came through the culture he created.
