TORONTO, Ontario — The baseball world is mourning the loss of former Toronto Blue Jays closer Duane Ward, who passed away of natural causes while in Toronto over the weekend. He was 62.
The Toronto Blue Jays confirmed Ward’s death in an official statement, noting that he had traveled to Toronto to reunite with his former teammates for the club’s statue unveiling ceremony honoring the 1992 and 1993 World Series championship teams. Although he arrived in the city on Friday, Ward was absent from Saturday’s pregame ceremony. The organization later confirmed that he had died of natural causes.
“It is with profound sadness that the Toronto Blue Jays mourn the passing of pitcher Duane Ward, one of the most accomplished and beloved relievers in franchise history,” the club said in its statement.
Ward spent 10 seasons with the Blue Jays from 1986 to 1995, appearing in 452 games and establishing himself as one of the greatest relief pitchers in franchise history. He recorded 121 career saves for Toronto, ranking among the club’s all-time leaders, and became known for his dominance in high-pressure situations. Whether serving as a setup man or closing out victories, Ward played an instrumental role during one of the most successful eras in Blue Jays history.
