William “Bill” Griffith, the longtime television journalist whose familiar voice and trusted presence became a staple in San Diego households for nearly four decades, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, July 17, 2026, following a medical event. He was 77.
Griffith’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from former colleagues, viewers, and friends who remember him not only as an accomplished broadcaster but also as a compassionate mentor, devoted family man, and courageous cancer advocate. For generations of Southern Californians, he was a reassuring presence who delivered the news with professionalism, warmth, and unwavering integrity.
Born in South Carolina, Griffith proudly served in the United States Army before embarking on a broadcasting career that ultimately led him to San Diego. He joined KGTV Channel 10 (ABC 10News) in February 1976 at just 27 years old, beginning a remarkable career that would span nearly 40 years.
Throughout his tenure, Griffith filled nearly every major on-air role at the station. He served as weekend news anchor, sports director, consumer reporter, talk show host, magazine show host, and eventually co-anchor of the station’s morning and 11 a.m. newscasts beginning in 1996. By the time he retired in 2015, he had earned the affectionate title of the “dean” of San Diego television news.
